Installation Requirements

The following are the requirements for installing Chinese Toolbox 2012.

  1. You must be logged on as an administrator of your computer.
  2. Your computer should be running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. 64-bit versions of Windows are supported. Although Chinese Toolbox 2012 has not been tested on any server versions of Windows, server versions are allowed by the installer. The program has been tested on US English versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Vista (64-bit), Windows 7 (64-bit) and Chinese versions of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It has undergone minimal testing on a traditional Chinese version of Vista. It has not been tested on the 64-bit version of Windows XP or on any other language versions of Windows.
  3. The screen resolution must be at least 1024x768. This limits Chinese Toolbox 2012 from being installed on devices with a smaller screen resolution. Some net-book or pad computers have screen resolutions of 1024x600 or smaller. The current version of Chinese Toolbox 2012 will not install on such devices.
  4. Your computer must have at least 256 MB of RAM (memory).

Downloading

ChineseToolboxInstaller.msi and ChineseToolboxInstaller.exe are the installers for Chinese Toolbox 2012. Both install the same program, Chinese Toolbox 2012 (12.0.0.1). After clicking on a download link to download one of these installers, one or more security/confirmation dialogs will appear. After the installer file has downloaded to your computer, locate the file and launch it. Chinese Toolbox 2012 will being installing to your computer. If you’re running Windows XP or above, a security warning dialog similar to the following may appear.

Check that the Publisher field displays “Aaron Todd Sherrill”. If “Unknown Publisher” appears for the Publisher, cancel the installation. Chinese Toolbox 2012 is digitally signed, and “Unknown Publisher” should never appear during installation. The appearance of “Unknown Publisher” indicates that the installer has been modified, most likely through corruption while downloading.

Typical Installation

After downloading the installer and clicking on Run in the previous dialog, the welcome dialog will appear:

Click on the Next button to proceed. The End-User License Agreement dialog will appear.

Read through this license agreement, and if you accept the terms, click “I accept the terms in the License Agreement”, then click the Next button. The “Select Installation Folder” dialog will appear requesting where the program is to be installed.

If you choose a folder other than the default, you must ensure other users of your computer have access rights to that folder; otherwise, they will not be able to run Chinese Toolbox 2012. Click the Next button when you’re ready to continue the installation.

At the “Ready to Install” dialog (above), click the Install button. At this point either an “Open File - Security Warning” dialog (shown below) or a “User Account Control” message (not shown) will appear. If you have downloaded Chinese Toolbox more than once, the downloader may rename the file so as to prevent overwriting of previous copies of the file. In this example [1] has been added to the name of the original installer.

After responding affirmatively to one of the security messages, the “Installing Chinese Toolbox” dialog will appear as shown below:

At the final dialog (“Completing the Chinese Toolbox 2012 Setup Wizard”) click the Finish button to complete the installation.
