Obtain a READER Mode License
Three options exist for obtaining a READER Mode license for Chinese Toolbox:
- Purchase a license via the PayPal button on this page.
- Create a backlink to http://www.chinesetoolbox.com, include a simple recommendation with your link, and request a Backlink License as described below.
- If you are a teacher of Chinese in any established school or university, I am pleased to offer you a free READER Mode license. I would just ask that you use the program and provide feedback that I can use to develop better versions of Chinese Toolbox in the future. For verification please send an email to freeforteachers@chinesetoolbox.com containing the URL of your school’s faculty web page showing your name, position and email address. The email should be sent using your published email address.
With all options, you get free program updates during your license period which begins when the payment process is completed at PayPal, or when the serial number is generated (for backlinks and teachers). Details of options #1 and #2 are provided below.
Purchase a License Via PayPal
There’s several benefits to purchasing a license, as opposed to requesting a Backlink License:
- Serial number availability is almost immediate. Within minutes of making the purchase, a serial number is emailed to you which you can then enter into the License window of Chinese Toolbox.
- Your READER Mode discount is locked-in for the entire license term, up to 10 years. This is a very significant discount, as Chinese Toolbox READER will be a higher end product with the next major release. A new mode, WORD Mode, will take the place of the current READER Mode price point, while READER Mode will be elevated to the next higher tier. See Comparison of Modes and Prices for more information.
- You get an additional discount by choosing a three year term (11% discount), a five year term (14.5% discount), or a ten year term (16.5% discount).

Create Backlink and Recommendation
Before proceeding, you should use Chinese Toolbox 2011 in TRIAL Mode and become somewhat familiar with its functionality. Please don’t request a Backlink License unless you genuinely consider Chinese Toolbox 2011 worth recommending.
A Backlink License is a READER Mode license based on the existence of (1) a web link to http://www.chinesetoolbox.com and (2) a simple recommendation of Chinese Toolbox 2011 to your friends, classmates, and/or colleagues. A single phrase or sentence positively mentioning Chinese Toolbox is sufficient.
Steps to receive a Backlink License:
- Check this page for the status of this promotion.
- Create your link to http://www.chinesetoolbox.com with your recommendation.
- Email the web address of your link to backlink@chinesetoolbox.com.
- Wait for an email response to your request. Requests will be handled in the order they are received. Because this business currently is a one-man operation, it could take a few days to respond to your request. Please be patient; I will get to it as soon as possible
The serial number you receive with your Backlink License will be good for one year. Thereafter, you could reapply for a Backlink License, assuming this promotion still exists. Please do not delete the backlink or recommendation after you receive the Backlink License. Doing so would invalidate your serial number and Backlink License.
Also note that requests for a Backlink License could be refused. If the webpage on which the backlink and recommendation exist is improper in any way (offensive, vile, abusive, repulsive, promoting illegal activities or items, etc.), the request will likely be refused.
